4D3N Pasola Sumba – Ritual Fighting Ceremony

Pasola is a thanks giving ceremony to the ancestral spirit of people from West Sumba, East  Nusa Tenggara. More than 50 men riding horses which divided into two groups – from upper and lower villages. Before they start, The RATO (Traditional priest leader) Prays in between of two groups, then he throws a spear to start the game. Immediately followed by those horse riders race their horse and throw their spears toward the opponent over and over.

This ceremony will be held only once a year (FEBRUARY and MARCH) and date could not be predicted in advance, it is always not in the same date every year. It depends on RATO’S decision which is announced one or two weeks before.

ITINERARY

Day 01.  Arrival Tabolaka-Waikabubak (West Sumba )

On arrival at Tambolaka Airport, our Professional guide awaits you and escort to Manandang Hotel or Similar for lunch and directly check – in. In the aafternoon will continue with Sumba city tour of WAIKABUBAK to visit traditional market   and then continue to PRAI IJING village, TARUNG traditional Village and WAI TABAR Village to see stone graves and traditional houses Of Sumbanese. Then return to Hotel after visiting local market of WAIKABUBAK.

Dinner and overnight at Manandang Hotel or Similar. (L/D)

Day 02. Waikabubak- Wanukaka – Pasola (B/L/D)

Early morning breakfast (04.00am) at hotel, drive to WANUKAKA about 35 MINUTE drive to attend the PASOLA, direct to the beach to see ceremony of catching sea worm by the RATO, then back to the field   for attending the PASOLA throughout the Day. Lunch box will be provided on the Spot. Afternoon return to hotel for Accommodation and meals at Manandang Hotel or similar.

Day 03. Waikabubak- Kodi (B/L/D)

After breakfast at Hotel Drive to Kodi Area to visit: Tosi Village, Parona baroro Village, Rotenggaro Village, this place to see all the house are very high roof more than ten meters high, and pero Beach. Lunch box will prepare on the beach or at Waikury lagoon, afternoon return to Hotel   , dinner and overnight at Hotel Manandang

NOTE: If there no schedule of PASOLA on that day, we will only visit Kodi Village and surrounding.

Day 04. Waikabubak-Tambulaka-Denpasar (B)

After Breakfast at your hotel , Transfer  to Tambulaka /Waingapu  Airport to catch flight  for your next destination.

PASOLA SUMBA

The Sumba community performs the Pasola ritual between February and March as part of the Nyale ritual, when sea worms fill the waters around Nusa Tenggara. This spiritual Fighting consists of two teams of hundreds of people, throwing blunt spears from the running horse. This bloody match is a form of offering to the gods to be given an abundant harvest.
